Slayer training

OSRS Slayer 1–99 Guide

Slayer is a series of assignments, not one monster repeated to 99. The biggest improvements come from choosing a suitable master, using the right setup for each task and spending points to avoid tasks you do not want. Plan the task mix you can actually sustain, then update it as new monsters unlock.

Updated

Build a route around your combat level

Slayer means completing assignments, so your pace depends on the monsters, weapons and travel as well as the Slayer level on your account. Pick a master you can train with comfortably. Better combat stats and protection prayers can make every later assignment easier.

From the Museum to level 13 Slayer

Optional quest route · order, requirements and next training method

Do the Museum quiz first, then A Porcine of Interest once you can handle a sourhog. You do not need to complete a Slayer assignment before either reward.

  1. Level 1 → 9 +1,000 Slayer XP

    Natural history quiz

Before you start: No skill requirements or combat.

Go downstairs in Varrock Museum, speak to Orlando Smith and answer the questions at every creature display. Speak to him again to collect the reward; you also gain 1,000 Hunter XP.

  2. Level 9 → 13 +1,000 Slayer XP

    A Porcine of Interest

Before you start: Combat supplies for a sourhog; no Slayer requirement.

Read the notice board in Draynor Village to begin, then investigate Sarah’s problem at the farm south of Falador. Finish the sourhog hunt for the XP and 30 Slayer points.

Continue from level 13

At 13 Slayer, choose a master your combat level allows. Turael in Burthorpe has no combat-level requirement; use the master comparison below before travelling to a stronger one.

Go to the training instructions →

Levels count the XP listed above from a fresh start. Making your own supplies, quest fights or optional lamps can put you further ahead.

Choose a master based on combat level and access, not Slayer level alone. At low combat stats, better weapons, protection prayers and a few combat quests can shorten every later task. There is no need to struggle through hours of slow kills just because the next master is technically available.

Buy an enchanted gem and the required protective equipment from a Slayer master. Read the assignment and check the monster’s actual Slayer level and equipment requirements. Wear earmuffs for banshees, a nose peg for aberrant spectres and a mirror shield for basilisks; missing the required protection makes their attacks much more dangerous.

Fastest Slayer training

Fast Slayer comes from a suitable master and task list, then efficient combat on the assignments you keep. One universal XP-per-hour figure cannot describe every task roll.

No combat-level requirement. Aya replaces Turael during While Guthix Sleeps.

Combat levels 3–20: Turael or Aya

Short assignments are useful for an opening or points-boosting cycle. Replacing an existing task through Turael resets the normal task streak; asking for a fresh assignment after completing a task does not.

Getting there

Burthorpe, north of Taverley. A games necklace to Burthorpe makes the trip short.

Bring and unlock

No combat-level requirement. Aya replaces Turael during While Guthix Sleeps.

  1. Ask for an assignment and confirm the monster, quantity and any location restriction. Check the task against your block and skip plan before buying supplies.
  2. Choose a suitable monster variant and location. Equip the required protection item and use the combat style, cannon or multi-target spell which fits that task.
  3. Complete the assignment, then bank and return for another. Record total task XP and elapsed active time so the next estimate includes the parts between kills.

Most Slayer XP comes from killing assigned monsters. The task-completion reward is Slayer points, so a short task can be useful for building a streak even when it gives little XP.

XP and supplies

Task estimates use your entered average XP and full task time. Change those inputs when the task list, combat setup or master changes.

Use Turael for the opening tasks, then consider Mazchna at 20 combat. These switches use combat level, not Slayer level. You can return for short tasks in a points-boosting cycle later; replacing an unfinished task resets your normal streak.

20 combat and access to Canifis.

Combat levels 20–40: Mazchna

A manageable early master whose task list is often less demanding than moving straight to a longer Vannaka assignment.

Getting there

North-east Canifis, after reaching Morytania through Priest in Peril.

Bring and unlock

20 combat and access to Canifis.

  1. Ask for an assignment and confirm the monster, quantity and any location restriction. Check the task against your block and skip plan before buying supplies.
  2. Choose a suitable monster variant and location. Equip the required protection item and use the combat style, cannon or multi-target spell which fits that task.

At 20 combat, take tasks from Mazchna in Canifis. At 40 combat, Vannaka offers the next step, but keep using Mazchna if the longer assignments would strain your gear or food.

40 combat. Bring the task-specific equipment required by the assigned monster.

Combat levels 40–70: Vannaka

Useful for ordinary early Slayer progression, but some assignments are much slower than others at low combat stats.

Getting there

The Edgeville Dungeon, reached through the trapdoor in the ruined building south of Edgeville bank.

Bring and unlock

Use Vannaka from 40 combat, then consider Chaeldar at 70 after Lost City. Your Slayer level unlocks monsters within task lists; it does not replace the master’s combat requirement.

70 combat and Lost City.

Combat levels 70–85: Chaeldar

Longer assignments suit an account with sustainable combat gear. Check the task location and protection equipment before travelling.

Getting there

Zanaris, near the throne room. Enter through the Lumbridge Swamp shed with a dramen or lunar staff, or use a suitable unlocked fairy-ring route.

Bring and unlock

70 combat and Lost City.

From 70 combat after Lost City, use Chaeldar until Nieve becomes available at 85 combat. Konar is another option from 75 if brimstone keys and task points matter more than choosing your own location.

85 combat. Steve replaces Nieve after Monkey Madness II.

Combat levels 85–100: Nieve or Steve

A useful high-combat master with fewer location restrictions than Konar. Choose convenient variants and multi-combat areas where the task allows them.

Getting there

Outside the Stronghold Slayer Cave in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Spirit trees and the slayer-ring teleport make later visits quick.

Bring and unlock

From 85 combat, use Nieve or Steve until you reach 100 combat and 50 Slayer for Duradel. Stay with this master if you prefer the task list; the next unlock is a choice, not an obligation.

100 combat, 50 Slayer and Shilo Village. Kuradal replaces Duradel after While Guthix Sleeps.

Combat levels 100–126: Duradel or Kuradal

A strong default for a developed account which wants longer assignments and freedom to choose the training location.

Getting there

Complete Shilo Village, then find Duradel upstairs in the building south of the river. Karamja gloves 3 teleport to the underground gem mine; gloves 4 teleport directly to the Slayer master.

Bring and unlock

100 combat, 50 Slayer and Shilo Village. Kuradal replaces Duradel after While Guthix Sleeps.

  1. Ask for an assignment and confirm the monster, quantity and any location restriction. Check the task against your block and skip plan before buying supplies.

At 100 combat and 50 Slayer, use Duradel after Shilo Village, or Kuradal after While Guthix Sleeps. This is a strong long-term master for the rest of the route to 99 Slayer.

Mortimer: choose tasks for superior drops

Mortimer is in Wyrmscraig Cavern, reached during Fallen From Grace. You need 70 Slayer and 100 combat, or 99 Slayer, as well as the quest access. He offers two assignments to choose from, increasing to three after 50 of his tasks. Every offer has a modifier, so compare the monster and bonus together.

His tasks have superior variants. A superior-drop modifier improves the chance of a superior’s unique reward; it does not make superiors spawn more often. This makes Mortimer particularly useful when an imbued heart or eternal gem is your goal. A short easy task can also be worthwhile when neither offer suits you and you want to reach the next unlock.

Point and quantity modifiers are available immediately. Clue modifiers unlock after 15 tasks, superior-unique modifiers after 25 and XP modifiers after 40. A quantity modifier can make a fast task longer or shorten an unwanted one. Read the offered value before committing.

Mortimer does not award normal task points or advance the ordinary streak. Points come only from a points modifier, without the usual milestone multipliers. Skipping costs 100 points, his two block slots cost 120 each, and Turael cannot replace his assignments. Stored tasks use the shared storage system.

The Slayer planner uses normal and Wilderness streak rules. Keep Mortimer’s tasks separate when budgeting points; a 50th Mortimer task unlocks a third choice, not a normal-master milestone payout.

Build a task list around methods you will use

A task’s assignment weight determines how often it appears relative to the other eligible tasks. Blocking a frequent, unwanted assignment can save more time than blocking a rare nuisance. Use your chosen master’s list and your unlocked monsters when deciding where to spend a block slot.

A normal paid skip costs 30 points. Each master has a separate block list: blocks cost 40 points at Turael, 50 at Mazchna, 60 at Vannaka, 70 at Chaeldar, 80 at Konar, 90 at Nieve and 100 at Duradel or Krystilia. Only Turael, Aya and Spria share a list. Keep a reserve before skipping aggressively; Mortimer has different rules below.

Extend tasks you want more of, such as a useful multi-target assignment or a monster with a drop you are actively pursuing. An extension makes the task longer; it does not make its kills faster. Avoid unlocking optional tasks merely to fill the reward list.

Slayer 65 dust devils and 80 nechryaels are useful burst opportunities in appropriate multi-combat areas. Gargoyles at 75 offer a more relaxed money task, while abyssal demons at 85 are a familiar weapon-drop goal. These unlocks are reasons to reconsider the task list, not automatic switches away from every other assignment.

Good task rates do not equal a whole-master average

For a developed combat account, the Wiki lists around 100,000–110,000 Slayer XP/hr when barraging dust devils in the Catacombs, around 100,000 at greater nechryaels and around 150,000 at smoke devils with a good cannon-lure and barrage loop. These are high-efficiency task references, not a promise that every hour from 65 Slayer onward is a barrage task.

Less intensive choices have their place. Abyssal demons are listed at around 53,000 Slayer XP/hr with a venator bow versus 80,000 with Magic; melee gargoyles around 30,000. Cannon tasks can fill useful gaps: the published references are around 75,000 for kalphites and 85,000 for Lighthouse dagannoth. Combat levels, damage gear, offensive prayers and effective cannon placement matter.

Use a slaughter bracelet on a task you want to prolong; it sometimes prevents a kill counting towards the assignment, so you gain more XP before returning to a master. An expeditious bracelet helps shorten a task you want to finish quickly. These change the time spent on each assignment, not the XP awarded by each kill.

Before planning a long grind, choose whether the slower money tasks belong in your list. A main spending on cannonballs and barrage runes has a different task mix from an Iron keeping herbs and meleeing assignments. The planner’s custom task budget remains available for either approach; compare its implied XP/hr with the specific methods you intend to use.

A high rate during one ideal barrage task is a task benchmark. Travel, banking, slow assignments and getting the next task all belong in the average for a route to 99.

Low-attention Slayer training

Choose assignments that let you stay in combat with little movement. This makes individual tasks quieter; it does not create an entirely automatic Slayer route.

Turn a suitable task into a faster session

At 67 Magic after Lunar Diplomacy, Astral Contact (formerly NPC Contact) can give you a new assignment remotely. Its right-click re-contact option saves returning to the master between tasks. Bring one astral, one cosmic and two air runes per cast, or use equipment which supplies the elemental runes.

For a cannon task, choose a place where targets cross several useful firing lines and can reach the cannon. Keep it loaded and attack alongside it where appropriate. A cannon in a quiet corner with poor coverage consumes time without getting the method’s main advantage.

For burst or barrage tasks, gather monsters with a fast ranged weapon, protect from their attacks and move to stack them. Cast on a central target and re-form the stack when too many enemies spread out. Dust devils require face protection even if you are using protection prayers.

An imbued Slayer helmet provides the ranged and Magic on-task bonuses; the ordinary helmet covers the melee benefit and combined protective items. It does not remove every monster-specific requirement, so check exceptions such as special shields or finishing tools.

Loot between stacks or kills in a rhythm which fits your goal. Picking up every low-value item can cut the session rate sharply. On an Iron, some apparently cheap drops are useful supplies, so the best loot rule may differ from a main’s GP-only filter.

Other worthwhile methods

Slayer can be a combat, loot or collection goal as well as a race to 99.

75 combat. Each assignment specifies both the monster and where it must be killed.

Combat levels 75–126: Konar quo Maten

More points per ordinary task and access to brimstone keys, in exchange for location restrictions which can rule out the fastest setup.

Getting there

Find Konar at the summit of Mount Karuulm. Use fairy ring CIR and run north, or teleport to the summit with Rada’s blessing 3 or 4.

Bring and unlock

75 combat. Each assignment specifies both the monster and where it must be killed.

From 75 combat, choose Konar when you want brimstone keys and more points per task. The assigned location can prevent a fast cannon or bursting setup, so use another master when unrestricted XP is the priority.

Be ready for player attacks, understand the supplies and equipment at risk, and have completed an initial Slayer task.

From your second Slayer task: Krystilia

Wilderness tasks use a separate streak. Their rewards and multi-combat methods can be attractive, but interruption and lost-supply time belong in the session budget.

Getting there

In the jail north-east of Edgeville bank. Her assignments must be completed in the Wilderness.

Bring and unlock

Be ready for player attacks, understand the supplies and equipment at risk, and have completed an initial Slayer task.

  2. Choose a suitable monster variant and location. Equip the required protection item and use the combat style, cannon or multi-target spell which fits that task.
  3. Complete the assignment, then bank and return for another. Record total task XP and elapsed active time so the next estimate includes the parts between kills.

Do not combine the Wilderness streak with the ordinary streak in the points input. Decide what you are willing to lose before entering the Wilderness.

XP and supplies

Task estimates use your entered average XP and full task time. Change those inputs when the task list, combat setup or master changes.

After completing an initial Slayer task, Krystilia offers Wilderness assignments on a separate streak. There is no later level where you must leave; choose this route only for sessions where you accept player attacks and possible supply losses.

Make the streak pay for your choices

The first four completed tasks award no task points. From the fifth onward, eligible masters award their base points, with larger rewards on every 10th, 50th, 100th, 250th and 1,000th task. Only the largest matching milestone applies; the bonuses are not added together.

A common points-boosting approach is nine short Turael tasks followed by a higher-point master for the tenth. Start each Turael task after completing the previous assignment so the streak grows. Replacing an unfinished assignment is the action that resets it.

Konar’s location requirements can slow individual tasks but her higher base points improve milestone rewards. Wilderness Slayer uses its own streak, so keep that input separate. Quest points, Combat Achievement bonuses and one-off spending are outside the task-point result here.

Bigger and Badder costs 50 points and unlocks superior Slayer monsters on eligible tasks. It is a useful early purchase for the extra XP and a chance at superior uniques. Ring Bling costs 150 and Task Storage costs 500. A Slayer helmet is valuable too, but keep enough points for the blocks and skips which improve your actual task list.

An Iron’s useful drops change the route

An Iron may keep a task for a weapon, runes, herbs, bones or secondary ingredients even when a main would skip it for faster XP. Set a clear drop or supply goal so a detour has a purpose.

Cannonballs and Ancient runes speed up suitable tasks, but obtaining those supplies takes time. Compare the whole preparation-and-training loop. Use free or readily restored supplies where the method supports them, and save expensive multi-target attacks for monsters which can be stacked effectively.

Do not put a rare drop’s full GE value into every task. The planner leaves random loot out of guaranteed profit and lets you budget the supplies you expect to consume. Track actual loot across several tasks if you want an account-specific money estimate.

Time and cost for your goal

Use your average across several complete tasks when planning a long goal. Spending more on barrage spells and cannonballs can buy speed, but the task list and combat stats determine whether that spending produces the expected gain.

Plan your Slayer route.

Use several tasks to estimate the road to 99

A single excellent dust-devil task is not a representative average for a whole master. Record several assignments, including travel, banking and slow tasks you chose to keep. Divide their total Slayer XP by total active time for a better long-term pace.

The planner turns your average XP per task into a task count and applies the entered duration. It chooses a master from your current combat level and quest unlocks, but does not invent future combat levels, assignment rolls or a best-in-slot block list. Rebuild the route after a meaningful combat upgrade or Slayer unlock.

The final task is counted as a completed average task, so the plan can pass the target slightly. The points result is a budget at the entered streak and skip frequency, not a promise about the exact assignments you will receive.

Clicks and client settings

Keep the task count in view

These RuneLite plugins are included with the client. Find them in the plugin configuration sidebar, turn them on and open their settings.

Slayer: remaining kills and task details

Enable RuneLite’s Slayer plugin and turn on Task Infobox. It shows the remaining task; hover over it to see points, streak and an assigned location. Count On Items also puts the remaining count on Slayer helms and gems. Check the count when you arrive so you do not spend a trip killing the right monster in the wrong assigned area.

Menu Entry Swapper: ask for the next assignment

Enable Assignment in Menu Entry Swapper to put the Slayer master’s task option ahead of Talk-to. This is useful when returning for a new task; use the ordinary dialogue or reward interface when changing your block list or spending points.

Choose your next goal

Open the Slayer Training Planner for your method switches and time budget.
