Thieving training

OSRS Thieving 1–99 Guide

Thieving is easier to stick with when the clicks fit your session. Learn stalls for the opening, use blackjacking or artefacts for active XP, and keep Varlamore or knights available when you want a simpler rhythm.

Updated

Pick a method you can keep doing

Thieving ranges from repeated pickpockets to moving through houses, pyramids and guarded streets. Fast methods reward rhythm and movement; a stationary knight is simpler but still needs constant clicking. Choose your attention level first, then decide whether XP, coins or supplies matter most.

Starting at level 1? See the quest route ↓

Quest from 1 to 18 Thieving

Optional quest route · order, requirements and next training method

Hazeel Cult and Fight Arena skip pickpocketing men and most of the early bakery-stall levels. Both start around Ardougne; neither needs a Thieving level.

  1. Level 1 → 11 +1,500 Thieving XP

    Hazeel Cult

Before you start: No skill or quest requirements.

Speak to Ceril Carnillean at the house in southwest Ardougne. Choose Hazeel’s side if you want to finish without fighting.

  2. Level 11 → 18 +2,175 Thieving XP

    Fight Arena

Before you start: No skill requirement, but you must defeat the quest enemies.

Speak to Lady Servil south of Ardougne. Take food and a ranged or magic attack so you can use the arena safespots.

Continue from level 18

Steal from Ardougne bakery stalls from 18 to 25, then switch to Hosidius fruit stalls. Each successful bakery steal gives 16 XP; drop or eat the cakes to keep space free.

Go to the training instructions →

Without quests, pickpocket men or women to 5, then move to bakery stalls. At 30, do The Feud if you want to unlock blackjacking; use stalls until the blackjacking route starts at 45.

Levels count the XP listed above from a fresh start. Making your own supplies, quest fights or optional lamps can put you further ahead.

Fastest Thieving training

There are worthwhile faster openings than the simple stall route. After that, switch between blackjacking, artefacts and high-level looting according to the methods you have learnt.

Levels 1–5: Men and women

You only need 49 successes for level 5. Stay near food instead of travelling across the map for a special target.

Getting there

Use the men and women around Lumbridge Castle, or a man near Draynor’s course entrance.

Bring and unlock

Bring a few cheap pieces of food. Follow the click setup above to make Pickpocket your normal click or tap. Hiding NPC attack options alone may still leave Talk-to first.

  1. Choose Pickpocket and repeat after each successful action.
  2. When caught, wait for the stun to finish. Eat before another failed attempt can kill you.

Keep your food close to your pickpocketing clicks so you can heal quickly between attempts.

XP and supplies

Expect roughly 5,000 XP per hour at the opening levels, with failures slowing you down. Move on to stalls as they unlock.

Pickpocket men or women until level 5; you need 49 successful steals from zero XP. Then move to a bakery stall in Ardougne, where you can eat the food you steal.

Levels 5–25: Ardougne bakery stall

An uncomplicated early route that also supplies its own food.

Getting there

East Ardougne marketplace. Use the eastern bakery stall, close to the central market.

Bring and unlock

Leave space for stolen food. You can eat it when damaged and drop the rest when XP is the priority.

  1. Stand on the baker’s tile so the guards cannot see the steal from their usual positions.
  2. Steal again when the stall restocks. If a guard attacks, break combat and return to the safe position.

Tea and silk stalls look similar, but their slower restocks make them weaker XP choices for this stretch.

XP and supplies

Below the 19.2k XP/hr clean-stall ceiling; interruptions slow it down.

Steal cakes until 25, then move to fruit stalls in Hosidius. Stand where the stall blocks the guards’ view and keep a few cakes for healing.

Levels 25–45: Hosidius fruit stalls

Keep the routine simple with one stall, or alternate two for faster XP.

Getting there

Go to the easternmost house near Hosidius’s beach. It has two fruit stalls close together without the market’s patrolling dogs.

Bring and unlock

Run energy helps with two stalls. Leave most of the inventory empty; shift-drop ordinary fruit if you are not banking it.

  1. Steal from one stall as it respawns, or move between both and drop fruit while running.
  2. Eat strange fruit for run energy. On an Iron, keep golovanova fruit tops for botanical pies if you still need Herblore boosts.

Banking every ordinary fruit slows the method. Decide which useful items you want before filling baskets.

XP and supplies

One stall at a 32k XP/hr planning pace; clean respawns reach 34.2k. Alternating two stalls with fast dropping can reach 42.75k.

Use fruit stalls to 45 if you want to start blackjacking. Stay to 50 for house valuables or 55 for Ardougne knights if you prefer those routines.

Levels 45–99: Blackjacking bandits and thugs

A worthwhile active method. The rhythm is knock out, pickpocket, pickpocket—not an uncontrolled stream of clicks.

Getting there

Take a carpet to Pollnivneach from Shantay Pass. Bandits are in the northern part of town; Menaphite thugs are in the south.

Bring and unlock

A blackjack of any type and access from The Feud. Bring food that leaves an inventory blocker, such as wine jugs, and keep the inventory full. The bar sells wine; the nearby banknote merchant can unnote supplies.

  1. Lure one target into a room away from others. Use bearded level-41 bandits at 45, unbearded level-56 bandits at 55, and Menaphite thugs at 65.
  2. Knock out, then take two pickpockets while the target is down. Use the sound and XP drops to learn when each click is accepted.
  3. After a failed knockout, immediately try again or use a full-inventory pickpocket to interrupt the aggression. If combat begins, unequip the blackjack or switch to another weapon, then choose Knock-out without the blackjack to stop the fight. Wait a few seconds, re-equip it and restart.
  4. Top up food without leaving empty inventory slots. Keeping this routine stable is more valuable than squeezing in an unreliable third click.

Knocking out a bandit gives XP but no coins. Your earnings come from the successful pickpockets, doubled by full Rogue equipment. Bank for food when you need it.

XP and supplies

Practised blackjacking with wine resupplies. Switch target at 55 and 65. Learning needs a lower pace.

Start with bearded bandits at 45, change to unbearded bandits at 55, then Menaphite thugs at 65. The knockout-and-two-pickpockets rhythm stays the same. You can continue to 99, or try rogues’ chests at 84 and Pyramid Plunder’s last room at 91.

Levels 49–65: Stealing artefacts

A movement-based alternative to blackjacking, especially useful from 49 to 65. Learn the patrols before trying to add other skills between runs.

Getting there

Speak to Captain Khaled on the eastern docks of Port Piscarilius. Fisher’s Flute in Kharedst’s memoirs or the Book of the Dead lands near the houses.

Bring and unlock

Bring a lockpick, stamina potions and charged Kharedst’s memoirs or a Book of the Dead. Complete The Queen of Thieves to unlock the Fisher’s Flute teleport to Piscarilius.

  1. Get an assignment from Khaled, then teleport toward the houses and find the assigned drawers.
  2. Steal the artefact and return to Khaled on foot, avoiding the guards. Teleporting or logging out destroys the artefact. Hand it in before using Fisher’s Flute for the next trip.
  3. For the short return routes, carry a stolen artefact before luring a guard. At the east bridge, run underneath the guard from two tiles away and immediately use Fisher’s Flute. This sacrifices the artefact: get a new assignment after setting up the lure. Return to the house south of the southeastern bridge and climb its ladder to finish breaking pursuit. The east guard should face south.
  4. For the southeastern guard, run underneath from the opposite side of the pillar, then run back inside the southeastern house and climb the ladder. This leaves the guard facing west. Keep at least a one-tile gap when passing either lured guard.
  5. Check the guard positions on the map below before repeating the short crossings. While learning, use the longer northern escape past the bank and back to the Foodhall. Recharge the teleport book at the Old Memorial when needed.
Piscarilius map with red return routes from the houses and yellow arrows showing the east guard facing south and the southeast guard facing west.

These shorter returns need the guards facing the marked directions. Keep at least one tile between you and a lured guard. Red lines show the return paths, not safe routes through every possible patrol position.

Open full-size map ↗

This method does not need old Kourend favour. Getting caught costs more time than waiting a moment for a clean crossing.

XP and supplies

Practised route with guard lures, Fisher’s Flute teleports and stamina supplies.

Stealing artefacts is especially useful from 49 to 65, when blackjacking Menaphite thugs becomes available. You can keep delivering artefacts after 65 if you prefer movement and guard timing to repeated pickpocketing.

Levels 91–99: Pyramid Plunder

Strong late-game XP without Wilderness risk. The last room is where most of the useful urn XP comes from.

Getting there

Enter Sophanem after starting Icthlarin’s Little Helper, or use a pharaoh’s sceptre to Jalsavrah. Contact! unlocks the nearby bank.

Bring and unlock

Food, antipoison and run restoration. A charged sceptre makes returns much faster. Keep suitable gold artefacts to recharge it.

  1. Speak to the guardian mummy and start the five-minute run. Move through early rooms, searching for the correct door.
  2. Loot golden chests on the way, then spend most of the timer on urns in your highest room. Add urns in the previous room only when you have spare time.
  3. Finish or leave before the timer catches you in a poor spot, restore supplies and teleport back to the mummy.

Looting every urn in an early room wastes the time you could spend on level-91 urns. A sceptre drop is a bonus, not guaranteed hourly income.

XP and supplies

Solo level-91+ route using a pharaoh’s sceptre; resupply and slower room navigation reduce the pace.

At 91 you can loot the eighth and final room, which makes this a strong route to 99. You can play from 21, with another room every ten levels, but the late-game rate below depends on reaching that last room.

Levels 84–99: Rogues’ Castle chests

Very fast XP with valuable loot and a serious chance of interruption.

Getting there

Use a Wilderness obelisk to level 50 with Wilderness Hard, or the Ardougne/Edgeville lever and a knife for the web, then travel east. Avoid the Chaos Elemental on the way.

Bring and unlock

Protect from Melee, prayer supplies and inexpensive gear. Leave room for chest loot and carry only what you are willing to lose.

  1. Use Search for traps on a chest; opening it without checking hurts you.
  2. Keep protection active against the nearby rogues. Loot the northern chests and bank regularly rather than holding an ever-growing stack.
  3. Watch for players and know your route out. A clean hour and an interrupted hour can have very different outcomes.

An escape trick is not a guarantee. Do not value the full loot table as banked profit before you have actually banked it.

XP and supplies

Banking loot with occasional interruptions: roughly 260–270k XP/hr. Deep-Wilderness losses can change both time and value.

From 84, these chests offer very fast XP if you accept Wilderness risk. At 91, Pyramid Plunder becomes a strong alternative without player killers; staying here is still worthwhile when you can complete uninterrupted trips.

Faster openings: Chambers and Aldarin

If you are comfortable finding a raid room, Chambers of Xeric offers roughly 30–50k Thieving XP/hr even at low levels. Bring a lockpick and reload the raid until a Thieving room appears first. Work around four chests, drop the grubs when you cannot carry more, and repeat. Do not put them in the trough: that completes the room and ends the training.

Take the minecart from Port Piscarilius to Mount Quidamortem to reach Chambers. Finding a useful room takes longer than walking to a stall, so it is most worthwhile when you intend to train several opening levels.

At 36 Thieving, Aldarin villa chests are another fast opening to 45. Sail to Aldarin through your available Varlamore route and use the western villa for the shorter return after failures. Bring a lockpick and run restoration. Open the chest, then run back when a failed attempt teleports you outside; keep inventory space for gems, seeds and bone shards. Around 40,000 to 50,000 XP per hour is a practical reference near the unlock, with 60,000 possible when the loop goes well.

Knights are convenient, but they are not the fastest endgame method. Their no-fail ceiling at 95 with Ardougne Medium is 252,900 XP per hour before missed clicks and pouch handling.

Low-attention Thieving training

Varlamore gives you time to look away between actions. Ardougne knights give a simpler click target, but your mouse or finger still has to keep working.

Levels 55–99: Ardougne knights

A predictable stream of coins with little movement. It is still click-intensive, even when the knight is held in place.

Getting there

East Ardougne market or south bank. Open Friends Chat and join Thievinghost to find the current splasher world and location. Check the chat before hopping: host worlds can change. The splasher holds the knight in place; it does not improve your pickpocket success or XP. Look for the hosted knight, or a trapped knight in the northeastern market house. For that house, use the female knight from the southeastern market: she must be able to move between its two southern tiles or she will reset.

Bring and unlock

Food and optional dodgy necklaces. Ardougne Medium gives the local success bonus without wearing the cloak. Rogue equipment doubles the coins; it does not increase XP.

Your pickpocket supplies
  1. Dodgy necklace
    Prevent some stuns

A necklace has ten charges. Each successful prevention uses a charge; it saves the stun and damage rather than turning a failed attempt into XP.

  2. Coin pouch
    Open the pouches

A knight pouch contains 50 coins. With the full Rogue outfit you also receive 50 loose coins per success: 100 in total after opening the pouch.

  1. Choose Pickpocket and keep the knight in a fixed place on screen. Open coin pouches before reaching your account’s pouch limit.
  2. Eat when needed, replace necklaces when they break and resume after stuns. Put the pouch where opening it requires little mouse movement.
  3. At 95 with the diary, pickpockets stop failing. That removes the main interruption, although pouches and ordinary pauses still reduce a perfect rate.

The 50 coins per success are dependable; supplies are a separate cost. Without the full Rogue set, do not use a double-loot profit figure.

Why knights get faster as you level

Necklaces save time after failed attempts; the diary makes more attempts succeed. At 95 with the diary, every pickpocket succeeds and you can put the necklaces away.

XP and supplies

The faster rates use Ardougne Medium and dodgy necklaces. Necklaces stop being useful at 95 with the diary, when knights can no longer catch you.

Start at 55 and stay as long as you like, including to 99. Failures become less frequent as you level; at 95 with the Ardougne Medium diary, knights stop catching you. Coins still need collecting from the pouches throughout the grind.

Levels 50–99: Varlamore citizens and houses

A useful lower-attention loop, with short automatic sequences rather than constant clicking.

Getting there

After Children of the Sun, visit the bazaar in Civitas illa Fortis. The burglarable houses are west of the market; speak to Oriana to sell valuables.

Bring and unlock

Leave inventory space for keys and loot. A chisel breaks blessed bone statuettes into shards. Rogue equipment doubles house keys from citizens, but not valuables from furniture.

  1. Wait for a street urchin to distract a wealthy citizen, then pickpocket to begin the short automatic sequence. Collect keys for the house portion.
  2. Enter a house after its owner leaves. Search furniture and let the automatic looting run. Follow a flashing arrow when it points to a bonus stash.
  3. When the urchin whistles that the owner is returning, leave through the window. Do not wait to finish one more long furniture action.
  4. Sell valuables to Oriana and return to citizens when keys run low. Count both halves when measuring XP/hr.
Civitas illa Fortis map: wealthy citizens in the central bazaar, Oriana by the west bank, Caius northwest, Victor southwest and Lavinia south of the bazaar.

Collect keys at the bazaar, then look for the empty house. Caius, Victor and Lavinia are the three burglary targets; Oriana buys the valuables.

Open full-size map ↗

Allow time to collect keys as well as use them. Full Rogue equipment doubles the keys from successful citizen pickpockets, letting you spend more of the session inside the houses.

XP and supplies

Includes collecting keys: one hour of burglary plus about 30 minutes of distracted pickpocketing, or 15 minutes with Rogue equipment.

From 50, steal house keys and use them for the quieter indoor part of the loop. There is no later method you must switch to: stay to 99 if short bursts of clicking suit you better than knights or blackjacking.

Other worthwhile methods

For supplies or GP, the loot can matter more than the highest Thieving rate.

Vyres and elves for valuable rare drops. Vyres open at 82 after Sins of the Father; Prifddinas elves open at 85 after Song of the Elves. Full Rogue equipment doubles a rare reward when it arrives. Use the dedicated guides to compare ordinary supplies with the possibility of a dry session. Vyre money-making guide.

Master farmers, vyres and elves serve different goals

Master farmers become much more attractive on an Iron once you have a high Thieving level, the Rogue set and a useful Farming level. Seed quality improves with Farming level, including ranarrs, so an early account should not expect late-game seed rates. Trap a farmer close to a bank, keep spaces for the seed types you want and use a seed box if you have one. These seeds feed your Farming and Herblore routes.

Vyres at 82 require Sins of the Father and can drop blood shards. Prifddinas elves at 85 require Song of the Elves and can drop enhanced crystal teleport seeds. Lletya elves have earlier quest access but do not give that profitable Prifddinas loot. Use dodgy necklaces, the hard diary’s wider success bonus and suitable healing. Rogue equipment doubles the rare loot when it arrives, but it does not make it arrive twice as often.

For a short money-making session, compare ordinary loot with the rare-drop average separately. It is entirely possible to finish with no shard or enhanced seed. Pickpocketing these NPCs is a different economic choice from the guaranteed coins at knights.

Time and cost for your goal

Knights give dependable coin income; blackjacking and artefacts reward execution; vyres and elves rely much more on rare loot. Keep healing and dodgy-necklace replacements in the cost comparison. The calculator applies your selected diary and equipment to ordinary pickpocketing.

Plan your Thieving route or compare method quantities and costs.

Which upgrades actually change the method?

Rogue equipment requires 50 Thieving and 50 Agility to obtain from the Rogues’ Den maze beneath the Burthorpe pub. The full set doubles eligible pickpocket loot. One to four pieces give a 15%, 30%, 45% or 60% chance to double the loot; all five guarantee it. The set does not double XP, stall loot or house valuables.

Dodgy necklaces give a 25% chance to avoid the damage and stun from a failed pickpocket. Each necklace prevents ten stuns before breaking; replace it when it crumbles. At knights, stop bringing necklaces once you reach 95 with the medium diary. Shadow Veil adds another avoidance chance after A Kingdom Divided and at 47 Magic. These reduce interruption; neither turns a failed pickpocket into loot. Gloves of silence do not stack their success bonus with the Ardougne diary bonus.

Clicks and client settings

Make Pickpocket your normal click or tap

Set this up on your target before settling in. It saves opening a menu for each pickpocket at men, knights, master farmers, vyres and elves. RuneLite has a plugin for it; the official mobile app has its own built-in menu swapper.

RuneLite · Menu Entry Swapper

This plugin is included with RuneLite. Open the plugin configuration sidebar, search for Menu Entry Swapper and turn it on.

  1. Open its settings. Under NPC Swaps, enable Customizable left- and shift-click.
  2. Hold Shift and right-click the NPC. Open Swap left-click and choose Pickpocket.
  3. Release Shift and try one ordinary click. It should pickpocket instead of talking or attacking. Repeat the setup when switching to a different target type if needed.

Official mobile app · Menu Entry Swapper

The mobile app has a built-in menu editor, so you can make Pickpocket the normal tap action there too.

  1. Long-press the NPC to open its menu, then tap the edit button at the top right.
  2. Open that NPC’s entries and tap the up arrow beside Pickpocket to put it first.
  3. Leave the editor and test a normal tap. The top entry is the tap action. Set this up on each device; your RuneLite or other-device swaps do not carry over.

If you still talk, attack or open a menu

Check the selected action with one test click. In RuneLite, make sure you edited the NPC section and Swap left-click, rather than Swap shift-click. Hiding NPC attack options in the game settings removes accidental attacks, but does not move Pickpocket above Talk-to by itself. On mobile, use the NPC’s reset control to undo a bad ordering and set it again. If the edit button is absent, check for an app update; Jagex is investigating cases where it does not appear.

For blackjacking, keep Knock-out easy to reach in the right-click or long-press menu. Swap the unconscious target to Pickpocket, then use the knockout → two pickpockets sequence in the blackjacking instructions.
