Runecraft training
OSRS Runecraft 1–99 Guide
Runecraft is mostly about the trip between crafts. Better pouch use, a clean bank layout and the right teleport can matter more than the next rune unlock. Choose a routine you like, then measure a few complete laps before buying a large supply stack.
Updated
Choose between altar runs and minigame training
Runecraft trains through repeated altar trips, Guardians of the Rift and a few more specialised methods. Travel, essence pouches and banking make a large difference to altar rates. Decide whether you want fast levels, a quieter loop or runes and outfit progress alongside the XP.
Starting at level 1? See the quest route ↓From level 1 to Guardians of the Rift
Optional quest route · order, requirements and next training method
Follow this order to reach 27 and unlock Guardians of the Rift. There is a short training gap between Enter the Abyss and Temple of the Eye; the first miniquest does not reach 10 on its own.
Level 1 Required first
Rune Mysteries
Before you start: No skill requirements.
Speak to Duke Horacio upstairs in Lumbridge Castle. Deliver his talisman and finish the investigation with the wizards; this unlocks the next miniquest.
Level 1 → 9 +1,000 Runecraft XP
Enter the Abyss
Before you start: Rune Mysteries completed.
Speak to the Mage of Zamorak north of Edgeville in the Wilderness to begin. Follow his instructions in Varrock, carry the scrying orb to the essence mines and return it. Take only what you need into the Wilderness.
Level 9 → 10 +155 Runecraft XP
Craft air runes to 10
Before you start: An air talisman or tiara and rune or pure essence.
Use the Air Altar south of Falador. After the 1,000-XP reward, 31 essence at 5 XP each gives 155 XP: enough to reach 10. This counts essence used, not the number of runes produced.
Level 10 → 27 +9,210 Runecraft XP
Temple of the Eye
Before you start: 10 Runecraft and Enter the Abyss completed.
Speak to Wizard Persten in Al Kharid and complete the quest’s Guardians of the Rift tutorial. The 9,210 XP here includes both the tutorial and the final reward; do not add the tutorial again.
Continue from level 27
You now have 27 Runecraft and can play Guardians of the Rift. Head to the portal in the Wizards’ Tower basement and follow the mining, crafting and guardian-charging loop below.
Go to the training instructions →Levels count the XP listed above from a fresh start. Making your own supplies, quest fights or optional lamps can put you further ahead.
The Eyes of Glouphrie gives 6,000 Runecraft XP, but needs The Grand Tree, 46 Magic and 5 Construction. Do it while working towards other gnome quests if you have those levels. The Grand Tree also awards 18,400 Attack XP, so this shortcut does not suit an account keeping Attack at 1.
If you are starting without those quests, air runes teach the basic bank-and-altar loop. Fire runes at 14 are a later fallback. Making talisman tiaras is a faster paid opening: use a talisman on its altar with tiaras in your inventory. Check a small purchase first because some talismans trade slowly.
Fastest Runecraft training
Lava runes are the core fast solo route. Essence runners create a separate, much more expensive route and should never be mixed into an ordinary solo time estimate.
Assisted training with runners. Runners trade supplies to you at the altar so you can spend more time crafting. Lava runs use a different team from high-level aether runs. Arrange the team and payment before starting; these fast rates depend on other players keeping you supplied. Pouches and preparation.
Levels 1–14: Air runes
An accessible opening, including free-to-play. The crafting action is instant; almost all your time is spent travelling and banking.
Getting there
Use the Air Altar south of Falador. Bank at Falador’s east bank and run south, then enter the mysterious ruins.
Bring and unlock
Air tiara or talisman and essence. Members can use a ring of the elements for a quicker approach. A tiara saves the talisman’s inventory slot.
- Withdraw essence and fill any usable pouches. Enter the ruins and click the altar.
- Empty pouches and craft again, then return to the bank.
- Keep your route direct and run-energy budget realistic. A better teleport changes the lap time; enter that change in the planner.
Extra runes at higher Runecraft levels improve output, not XP per essence. Do not multiply the XP by the number of runes received.
Craft air runes to 14 if you are starting without quest XP, then switch to fire runes. Rune Mysteries and the early Runecraft quests are worth checking before making repeated low-level trips.
Levels 14–27: Fire runes
A simple elemental alternative before you have a minigame or combination-rune setup.
Getting there
The Fire Altar is north of Al Kharid near Emir’s Arena. A ring of dueling to the arena or a ring of the elements gets close; walk from Al Kharid bank if needed.
Bring and unlock
Fire tiara, essence, pouches and a bank teleport if using the members’ route.
- Teleport or run to the ruins, enter, craft the inventory and then empty your pouches.
- Use the altar again for the pouch essence and bank for another trip.
Sunfire runes are a separate recipe consuming sunfire splinters. Compare their extra output cost in the calculator instead of treating them as ordinary fire runes.
Craft fire runes from 14 until Guardians of the Rift at 27. For a more active route, switch to lava runes at 23 once your Magic and teleport setup can support it.
Levels 23–99: Combination runes: a short, repeatable lap
A worthwhile active method from a low Runecraft level, provided your Magic and teleport setup support the loop.
Bring and unlock
Magic Imbue on the Lunar spellbook at 82 Magic, a binding necklace, pure essence, usable essence pouches and the ingredient rune. A steam battlestaff supplies the fire and water runes for Imbue. Keep repair runes and a bank teleport handy.
- Fill your pouches from the bank, then fill the remaining inventory with essence. Teleport to the altar.
- Cast Magic Imbue before crafting, then use the ingredient runes on the altar. Empty pouches and craft again until all the essence is used.
- Teleport to a bank, refill and repeat. Repair pouches before they degrade, and replace the binding necklace before it runs out during a craft.
Levels 23–90: Lava runes at the Fire Altar
A worthwhile active method from a low Runecraft level, provided your Magic and teleport setup support the loop.
Start here: Use a ring of the elements to the Fire Altar, or a ring of dueling to Emir’s Arena and run north. Return with a bank teleport you can repeat accurately.
Levels 90–99: Aether runes in Zanaris
A late-game combination-rune option. Faster fairy-ring access and the Zanaris shortcut are central to the route.
Start here: Use a fairy ring to Zanaris, then run south through the 66 Agility shortcut to the Cosmic Altar. A nearby house fairy ring or quest-cape teleport shortens the return loop.
Learn the bank and altar sequence before chasing a quick lap time. A necklace guarantees combination-rune success; Magic Imbue replaces the talisman, not the necklace. Each altar craft uses a necklace charge, even when the inventory contains only a few essence.
Make lava runes from 23, then compare aether runes at 90 once their access and travel setup are ready. You can keep making lavas to 99 if you prefer the familiar route or the alternative is not unlocked.
Low-attention Runecraft training
Arceuus blood and soul runes have longer gathering and running stretches. They are a quieter route once you have the levels.
Levels 77–99: Arceuus: mine, bless, then craft
Mine dense essence, bless the blocks at the Dark Altar, then chisel them into fragments for the Blood or Soul Altar. The mining gives short pauses between inputs, while each full trip includes both preparation and the walk to the runecrafting altar.
Getting there
Travel to the dense essence mine north-east of Arceuus. Fairy ring CIS is convenient once unlocked; the Arceuus Library area provides a walking approach.
Bring and unlock
38 Mining, 38 Crafting, a pickaxe and chisel are enough to start. At 73 Agility, use the western rock scramble to shorten the return. The medium Kourend diary sometimes gives a second block from one mining action; it changes how quickly you fill up, not the XP per block. Keep your weight low and your run energy up. Raiments improve rune output; a higher-tier pickaxe does not mine these blocks faster.
- Mine an inventory of dense essence blocks. Take them to the Dark Altar to bless them, then chisel them while returning to the mine.
- Mine and bless a second inventory. Chisel one block before leaving for the rune altar, keeping the remaining blocks alongside your first stack of fragments.
- Run to the blood or soul altar, craft your fragments, then chisel the second inventory and craft again. Return to the mine.
Levels 77–90: Blood runes in Arceuus
A complete dense-essence loop. Blessing gives 2.5 Runecraft XP per block, which makes four fragments. Including that preparation, each fragment earns 24.425 XP for blood runes or 30.325 XP for soul runes.
Levels 90–99: Soul runes in Arceuus
A complete dense-essence loop. Blessing gives 2.5 Runecraft XP per block, which makes four fragments. Including that preparation, each fragment earns 24.425 XP for blood runes or 30.325 XP for soul runes.
The Dark Altar prepares the essence; it is not the final blood or soul altar. Do not bank ordinary pure essence for this route. Longer mining pauses are useful, but leaving the runestone idle reduces the whole-loop rate.
25,000 XP/hr is the conservative planning figure from the published range. The 36,000 high-efficiency reference needs the medium Kourend diary and 73 Agility shortcut confirmed in the planner. Both include the entire mining, blessing and crafting loop. Raiments increase rune output without increasing XP. Blood essence and diary bonuses can further improve the rune yield.
Craft blood runes from 77 to 90, then switch to souls for more XP or keep bloods for their sale value. Both use the same dense-essence preparation. The rates below assume the stated shortcut and diary, not just the Runecraft unlock.
The faster Arceuus figures require 73 Agility for the shortcut and Kourend Medium for extra blocks. Without those unlocks, use the lower route rate; the level-77 unlock alone does not provide the upgraded pace.
Other worthwhile methods
Rewards, rune supplies and quest access can be better reasons to choose an activity than a small hourly advantage.
Levels 27–99: Guardians of the Rift
Build up the Great Guardian’s power while defending the rift. The useful rewards are a reason to learn the game rather than only watching the XP counter.
Getting there
Enter the basement of the Wizards’ Tower south of Draynor after Temple of the Eye. Use the minigame teleport when available.
Bring and unlock
A pickaxe, chisel and all usable essence pouches. An attuned tiara or Hat of the Eye can help altar access. Bring the runes or pearls needed to keep pouches repaired.
- Mine guardian fragments before the game needs you at an altar. Turn fragments into guardian essence at the workbench and fill your pouches.
- Enter an available altar, craft runes and take the charged guardian stones back to the Great Guardian. Keep both elemental and catalytic energy in mind when choosing the next altar.
- Use an uncharged cell from the table to obtain charged cells while crafting. Repair or build barriers and guardians when the defence needs them; an undefended rift can lose the game.
- Take the yellow portal to the large guardian remains when it opens at a useful moment. That essence saves workbench time. End with both kinds of reward points so they can be spent together.
Raiments give extra runes, not extra XP. The abyssal needle lets you combine the four essence pouches at 25 Runecraft and 56 Crafting; the resulting colossal pouch reaches its full 40 capacity at 85.
Includes waiting between games. Random reward searches and the mix of crafted runes are not a fixed profit per game.
Start Guardians of the Rift at 27 after Temple of the Eye. Stay for the outfit, pouches and other rewards, or continue to 99. At 77, Arceuus blood runes offer a quieter alternative when you want a break from games.
Levels 1–99: Ourania altar
A steadier running loop which produces an assortment of runes. Its expected XP per essence improves with your Runecraft level.
Getting there
Use Ourania Teleport on the Lunar spellbook, then enter the cave. Without that teleport, walk from the battlefield southwest of Ardougne.
Bring and unlock
71 Magic, Lunar Diplomacy and the teleport learned from Baba Yaga. Bring a dust battlestaff, astral and law runes, bank-payment runes, essence pouches and some defensive gear.
- Set up Eniola’s quick bank payment with a cheap rune; each bank access costs 20 of that rune. Keep that payment stack separate from what you deposit.
- Fill pouches and inventory, then run down the short, dangerous route to the altar on an official Ourania world. Use protection or food as your account needs.
- Craft, empty the pouches and craft the rest. Teleport back and repeat. Repair pouches during the run when using Astral Contact.
Use bank deposit locks or fillers so you deposit the crafted runes without repeatedly losing your tools and payment stack. The medium Ardougne diary gives extra runes but does not increase XP.
The altar can be used from 1 Runecraft, but convenient travel needs the Lunar spellbook and 71 Magic for the Ourania teleport. Start when that setup is ready; the rune mixture improves as you level, so there is no compulsory later switch.
Daeyalt shifts part of the training into mining
After Sins of the Father and 60 Mining, mine daeyalt shards beneath Darkmeyer and exchange them for essence. Use the active rock as it changes. This is a useful lower-attention part of a Runecraft grind.
Daeyalt gives 50% more Runecraft XP per essence. If you are starting without a stack, its mining time must be added to the altar time. The planner does that when you select the option; its combined rate can be slower than continuous pure-essence crafting despite the larger XP drops.
Use the option for ordinary altar routes, not Arceuus bloods or Guardians of the Rift, which obtain their essence within the activity. If the daeyalt is already banked, its remaining crafting time is shorter than the combined mining-and-crafting estimate.
Read the rune value alongside the supply cost
Extra runes from level thresholds and Raiments improve GP per essence. They do not multiply the XP. Aether is a special case because its catalyst cost also scales with the extra output.
The planner includes recipe runes and binding necklaces, with sell-side rune prices after GE tax. Allow extra GP per hour for teleports, stamina and pouch-repair runes not included in the recipe. Ourania and Rift produce a variable mixture, so their rewards need a measured session rather than a single guaranteed GP figure.
An Iron may value blood, soul and nature runes for upcoming combat more than their GE value. Keep that supply goal in mind before selling a profitable main-account route as the only sensible choice.
Essence runners can produce much faster XP than solo crafting, particularly late-game combination runes. They require paid help and coordinated trades. Use an agreed total service cost and a measured session pace; a solo-lap estimate does not describe that method.
Time and cost for your goal
Separate paid-runner rates from solo rates, and include daeyalt gathering if you are doing it solely for this goal. The planner uses your actual shortcuts and pouch access; rune sales and supply costs belong in the same route comparison.
Plan your Runecraft route or compare method quantities and costs.
Make pouch and bank inputs match your inventory
A pouch takes an inventory slot as well as holding essence. The planner asks for the essence you actually carry outside your pouches, then adds only the capacity available at your current level. Recount those slots when you switch from several pouches to a colossal pouch.
A colossal pouch can be made at 25 Runecraft and 56 Crafting with an abyssal needle. Its capacities are 8 at 25, 16 at 50, 27 at 75 and 40 at 85. It does not hold 40 essence as soon as you obtain it.
Repair degraded pouches through the Dark Mage, Astral Contact or the unlocked Cordelia service. A lap average should include those repairs and necklace replacements. Timing only the trip from the bank to the altar gives an inflated hourly result.
Clicks and client settings
Use the helper for your Runecraft method
These RuneLite plugins are included with the client. Find them in the plugin configuration sidebar, turn them on and open their settings.
Kourend Library: find the books
Enable Kourend Library and open its sidebar panel at the Arceuus Library. Use the book locations to choose which shelves to visit next and collect books for several readers in one trip. When the books move, reset the old locations in the panel and search again.
Menu Entry Swapper: enter the Abyss directly
If you use the Abyss, enable Teleport to Abyss in RuneLite’s Menu Entry Swapper. This puts the Mage of Zamorak’s teleport ahead of Talk-to. Check that you are using the right NPC and action before starting repeated runs. Keep the short Wilderness run in mind when choosing what to carry.
Choose your next goal
Open the Runecraft Training Planner for your method switches and time budget, or compare one method’s quantities in the Runecraft Calculator.
