Herblore for profit

Make money at Mastering Mixology

Turn herbs into paste, fulfil potion orders and spend the resin on Aldarium to sell. You can start at 60 Herblore; better recipes help as you level. The real money-making target is a steady supply of all three resin colours.

Start with one affordable session

You need membership, 60 Herblore and Children of the Sun to reach Varlamore. Travel to Aldarin by boat from the southern Varlamore coast, then head to the Alchemical Society in the north of the island. If you have already unlocked Aldarin’s quetzal landing, fly there instead. The bank chest and refiner are upstairs; the activity is downstairs.

Bring clean herbs or unfinished potions for Mox, Aga and Lye paste. Use the refiner beside the bank and deposit the paste into the hopper downstairs. Each colour has its own 3,000-paste capacity. Your clothing does not increase resin rewards; wear light equipment and leave inventory space for potions.

Buy a modest paste batch while you learn. Refining is permanent, and herbs that were cheap last week may be poor value now. Level 81 unlocks MixALot and makes resin collection more flexible, but there is no need to buy 21 Herblore levels solely to try the activity.

Earn the resin you can spend

Those are three separate prices, not a 230-point total. At 3,000 resin of each colour you can buy 33 Aldarium, leaving 360 Mox, 1,020 Aga and 30 Lye. More Aga alone cannot buy the next one. That is why Lye often holds up your cash-out.

Learn with complete orders

Make the three potions on the current order board, process each at its requested station and hand them in together. Completing all three gives a 40% resin bonus. One correct order is enough to refresh the board, so you can choose to skip the other two once you understand what they cost you in time.

At 60 you only have the three single-colour recipes. Keep an eye on the banked resin after buying Aldarium. As the mixed recipes unlock from 63 onward, the board can offer more potions that add to a colour you already have plenty of.

When Lye is falling behind

Try prioritising orders that award Lye. If no order contains Lye, make one quick requested potion and hand it in to refresh the list. If only one contains Lye, completing that one alone gets you to another board sooner. With two Lye orders, making all three can be worthwhile for the set bonus.

Use this to spend a Mox or Aga surplus while catching up on Lye. If another colour starts holding up your Aldarium purchases, prioritise that one instead. Check the resin cost of your next few Aldarium after each purchase.

From 81: make Digweed count

MixALot uses one lever input of each colour: 10 Mox, 10 Aga and 10 Lye paste. It awards resin in all three colours. Pick mature Digweed when it appears and use it on an ordered MixALot before handing it in. The doubled reward is particularly useful when you want more spendable resin. Keep using the workstation speed-ups: saving a few seconds on every potion matters more over a long session than an occasional perfect order.

Compare cost per paste, not cost per herb

A more expensive herb can still make cheaper paste if it refines into a larger stack. The comparison below divides a clean herb’s buy price by its paste yield. It checks each colour independently; you do not have to use the same tier of herb for all three.

Prices can move between batches. The cheapest row is recalculated from the same 5-minute Grand Exchange snapshot and one-hour fallback used by the Herblore Calculator.

Try the actual GE offer before buying thousands. The calculator uses buy-side herb averages and a sell-side Aldarium average, so it reflects buying supplies and selling the reward rather than valuing both at an optimistic guide price. Existing herbs still have a replacement cost on a main.

What will your session earn?

The starting estimate uses the Wiki’s 260 potions per playing hour, completing all three orders at 81+ Herblore. Order weights give about 3,466 resin and 2,600 paste per colour. The 65,650 XP counts potion hand-ins; station bonuses, refining XP and Digweed are extra. Replace these averages with a timed session of your own, especially below 81.

Preparation is separate from playing time. The starting four minutes approximates refining 7,800 paste at the Wiki’s 120,000-paste hourly reference. Add your travel, banking, cleaning and selling time if those are part of this trip. If you measured everything together, enter that duration as playing time, scale resin and paste to that full hour, and set extra preparation to zero.

Measure one session before scaling it up

  1. Write down your XP, each resin balance and the three hopper counts. Include loose paste if you intend to deposit it later.
  2. Play for at least 30–60 minutes, including normal mistakes and Digweed pickups. A lucky few minutes is a poor basis for a long grind.
  3. Subtract starting balances from the final totals. Add back any resin spent on rewards during the test. Record each paste colour used, including refills.
  4. Divide by your playing hours to get hourly rates. For a 30-minute sample, double the observed XP, resin earned and paste used.
  5. Enter those values above and compare the net result with a small actual Aldarium sale.

After a few sessions, compare complete orders with prioritising your missing resin colour. Keep the herb costs and preparation time in both results. That will show which approach earns you more Aldarium for the time and supplies you spend.

Aldarium, barrels or permanent upgrades?

Aldarium is convenient because you can sell small batches. A disassembled chugging barrel may offer more per hour at some prices, but needs 17,250 Mox, 14,000 Aga and 18,600 Lye resin before you can sell one. That ties up several hours of rewards, and the market can move while you earn them. The Aldarium and barrel comparison is a useful first check.

If you still need prescription goggles or the alchemist’s amulet, decide whether that upgrade is worth more to your account than cashing out now. Those upgrades may save more on later Herblore training than you would earn by selling Aldarium now.

On an Iron, Aldarium becomes goading and prayer regeneration potions. Save harralander for goading potions and huasca for prayer regeneration rather than refining those supplies without checking your bank. The Iron herb recommendations explain which other potions you give up by using each herb.
